MIER Lanshan Ultralight Tent Review – The Truth With Real Pictures!

When you buy an ultralight tent, you don’t expect amazing comfort. Basically you want to have a durable, waterproof and lightweight tent that is easy and fast to set up. The Good:

• Really lightweight. Single person version weight 2.2lb (0.98kg).
• Extremely fast setup time – took me five and half minutes on my own.
• Very small carry bag, the whole tent takes almost no space up in your backpack. You can even carry it in the pocket of your jacket.
• Extreme waterproofing. MIER Lanshan’s fly has 5000 mm HH, while the floor has 6000 mm HH rating.
• Very stable thanks to the guy line system. Can do well in high altitudes and windy conditions.
• You can use it with an inner mesh wall or just set up the rainfly.
• The MIER Lanshan comes in a really nice packaging. Doesn’t matter in terms of performance, but it is a nice touch.

The Bad:

• You need a trekking pole to set it up, which is not included in the package. However you can use a stick like I did, or you can set it up between two trees as a tarp tent. There is room for improvisation.
• You need a large flat surface to secure all the guylines and get maximum stability.
• The door is a little bit on the small side, and the trekking pole in the middle will inevitably prevent you from moving around in the tent.

One of the biggest positives of the MIER Lanshan Ultralight tent is how fast you can set it up. Thanks to the inner mesh layer and the rainfly being attached together you can just put in a trekking pole, put some stakes in the ground and basically have the base of the MIER Lanshan set up.

It is probably a small touch, but I love the packaging of the MIER Lanshan 3. The box is painted in beautiful black and yellow. It has all the specifications written on the back. Also you can feel that it is made of great quality paper. Now this is not a big thing and has nothing to do with whether the tent is actually good or bad. But the first impression it gives is one of attention to detail and high quality craftsmanship.

Who Is The MIER Lanshan Ultralight Tent Best For?

The MIER Lanshan Ultralight tent is best for ultralight solo hikers. Now you need to travel extra light and be okay with giving up a little bit of your comfort. Having a trekking pole in the middle will inevitably limit your wiggle room in the tent and make it harder to move around.

In case you don’t have a car and you are cycling, and need a tent that is extremely easy to carry, the MIER Lanshan 3 is absolutely the right choice.

Obviously being so lightweight and having a packaging that allows you to fold up the tent into a tiny tiny bowl has its perks. For me the MIER Lanshan Ultralight tent is one of the easiest tents to carry in a backpack. The bag can be so small that you can even have it in a bigger jacket pocket. All in all the packaging weights maximum 2.2 lbs, which is easily within ultralight category.

Similarly, high altitude hikers who are looking for stability will be very content with this tent. Thanks to the many guylines and small size, it is really stable and will hold its own in high wind situations.

Now I would not recommend this tent for anybody who is not willing to travel extremely lightweight or doesn’t need to face extreme winds or heavy storms. The trekking pole in the middle and the small inner space makes the tent just too uncomfortable and tricky for regular hikers. In that case I would recommend the Naturehike Mongar 2, or the KAZOO Venus. The Featherstone Lightweight Tent is a little heavier but is much more comfortable and with more inner space.

How Waterproof Is The MIER Lanshan Ultralight Tent?

The biggest selling point of the MIER Lanshan is its much higher waterproofing compared to other tents in a similar price category. The rainfly is 5000 mm HH and the floor has 6000 mm HH waterproofing. This is four season tent category. Basically you can take the MIER Lanshan in extreme weather conditions and feel confident that you will stay dry.

Let’s take a look at what I thought of the different parts of the MIER Lanshan 3 Ultralight tent.

For one, the stakes are absolutely top notch. As you see on the pictures I set up the tent on pretty rocky ground. It could have been so easy for the stakes to not go into the ground or bend. Thankfully the ends of the stakes have little hooks in them. This helps the floor of the tent and the guylines stay taut even in the heaviest winds.

From the moment you touch the rainfly, you can feel how well designed it is.

Even though the company tries to market this tent as a spacious single person tent, I didn’t have this feeling. The inner space is a little small (89.7”x 29.5”x49.2” (LxWxH)). It is exacerbated by the fact that you have a trekking pole in the middle, so obviously your chances to move around are limited.

As with most extremely waterproof tents, the company designed the product to be really breathable. The whole inner wall is made of mesh. There is one mesh window on the outside, which you can close easily. Thanks to the excellent breathability of the MIER Lanshan, condensation is not an issue.

The MIER Lanshan Ultralight Tent has a pretty spacious vestibule. It is almost as wide as the tent itself. You can leave your wet clothes, dirty shoes or a pretty large backpack in it. The vestibule can be closed with a zipper and tapes.

Conclusion

The MIER Lanshan Ultralight Tent is extremely waterproof and stands up well to difficult weather conditions. What I can state as a negative in my MIER Lanshan Ultralight tent review is that it sacrifices a little bit of comfort in the process. However if you are an ultralight backpacker and weight is of the essence, it is a great choice!
