MC TOMOUNT Backpacking Tent Review – Shockingly Great Value Tent

The reason I wanted to review the MC TOMOUNT backpacking tent is simple. It is really cheap, yet has 4.6 star rating on Amazon for almost 300 reviews. If a product can mix low price, durability, waterproofness and lightweight design it is a winner I can wholeheartedly recommend. Does it achieve this? Read my MC TOMOUNT backpacking tent review to find out!

As there is a raging snowstorm now in Sweden, I took the liberty to set up the MC TOMOUNT inside my apartment for pictures.

MC TOMOUNT backpacking tent contents

The Good:

  • Great waterproofing. 3000 mm HH rated, 210T ripstop removable polyester rainfly.
  • Aluminium tent poles for durability and strength.
  • Double wall tent, great ventilation.
  • Removable rainfly for maximum breathability.
  • The bathtub floor is made of 210D reinforced oxford fabric.
  • Really lightweight for a 2 person tent. (2.56 kg/5 lbs)
  • Easy to set up, poles attach to the inner wall easily.

The Bad:

  • The stakes are not the best quality. I expect that I will have to replace them at some point.
  • The zippers on the mesh doors felt a little loose.
  • It is spacious enough for a 2 person tent, but if you are a big person like me, you might want even more space. ‎(13.4″L x 31.5″W x 13.4″H)

Instead of having one huge positive about the MC TOMOUNT backpacking tent, there have been several. First of all, the price is really extraordinary. I have to ask myself why people are not buying this tent more?

After all 69 dollars for a solid 2 person tent with relatively lightweight design and 3000 mm waterproofing is an excellent deal I would take any day.

Next to all of this the set up is really fast. The aluminium poles go together seamlessly, it is so easy to attach them to the walls.

Who Is The MC TOMOUNT Backpacking Tent For?

I would say that any two person backpacking trip will be a success with this product. Even if you are a solo backpacker, I would wholeheartedly recommend the MC TOMOUNT. I had no problems setting it up myself. And 5 pounds is not too much, a solo backpacker can easily carry that.

I love how the rainfly can be attached to the inner wall with straps. This is by far the best method I have seen so far. The fly is so tightly attached. Not to mention how much time you save on setting up the tent.

How Waterproof Is The MC TOMOUNT 2 Person Tent?

According to the manual, the rainfly has 3000 mm HH waterproof rating. This indicates a great three season tent. You can take off the whole rainfly, with the inner wall made of almost completely mesh. Even though the fly has UV protection, in really warm wether you might feel better without the fly on.

A small, but important detail is how high the bathtub floor reaches. It goes high enough that water can’t splash inside the tent even during really heavy rainfall.

The rainfly covers the whole tent completely. This gives you complete rain protection. You don’t have to be afraid of wind blowing debris inside.

MC TOMOUNT Tent Review

Let’s take a look at what I thought about the different parts of the MC TOMOUNT backpacking tent.

Set Up Time

The MC TOMOUNT backpacking tent took me 6 minutes to set up from start to finish. Count it in that I set it up only one time, in my living room. Of course if I did it outdoors, with stakes to put down it would have taken longer.

Inner Space

The inside is big enough to sleep two people. I could lay down comfortably. This is not the case with all two person tents. My feet or my head didn’t touch the walls.

Carry Bag

I liked the carry bag. Made of plastic, it is sufficiently small. When I folded up the MC TOMOUNT it fit inside really easily.

Stakes

I think the stakes could improve. They are the typical aluminium stakes you see in cheaper tents. I am sure after a few uses I will step on one accidentally and it will bend. That is just how it is. Expect to replace the stakes with better, more heavy duty options after a while. I recommend these tent stakes from Amazon.

Guylines

There are four reflective guylines inside the package. They help a lot in making the rainfly tout. But there is not much else to mention here. They get the job done.

Poles

For this price category tent the poles are really well made. Aluminium, shock cord connected poles are the name of the game. They are sturdy, durable, and don’t come apart while you are setting up the tent.

MC TOMOUNT pole attachment hook

You can insert the poles into metal rings on four corners of the inner tent. The process felt really easy and simple.

Ventilation Windows

The rainfly has three covered ventilation windows. Even during the heaviest storms the tent is able to breathe. This is a huge plus in the war against condensation.

Doors

The MC TOMOUNT backpacking tent has two large doors. They can be closed with double-end zippers. The doors are large enough for even big adults to move through effortlessly. However the double zippers felt a little loose, I had to hold the mesh to open it effortlessly.
