Best Large Family Tent – How To Choose?

Imagine spending a nice weekend under the stars with your family. You are done with cooking sausages on the open fire, all the beers are finished. It is time to go to bed. You will need a large tent to put the kids to sleep. Size is not the only thing that matters. You want a waterproof large tent, but also a comfortable one. Finding the right size tent is one of the most important parts of family camping. Which is the best large family tent of 2024 for family camping?

What are we not looking at? We will not look at any canvas tents, or wedding tents. Those are not the priority of Tentbroker.

Best Large Family Tent Of 2024

Coleman 4 Season Camping Tent

In terms of size and comfort this model does what you expect of it. It easily sleeps the number of people it promises (4/6/8/10 depending on capacity).

The biggest positive about of the Coleman 4 Season Camping Tent is how easy and fast it goes up. Its pole structure enables you to set it up in 5 minutes, which is extremely fast for a tent of this size.

However that comes at a cost. The poles are not the most durable and stable. In heavy winds you will have issues with the tent twisting and turning. The dome structure of the tent just adds to the problem.

Even though it comes with Coleman’s signature Weathertech System, I would not consider this tent waterproof. First of all, it is only a single wall tent, so there is a limit to how waterproof it can be.

Secondly, there are four mesh windows on the sides. This is excellent for ventilation. However it presents a big waterproofing risk. The water might seep in at any of these openings.

All in all I recommend the Coleman 4 Season Camping tent for any small family who plan on camping in an area without much rainfall, and with protection from heavy winds.

This model is available in 4, 6, 8 and 10 person versions.

Here is a little table showing you the measurements of each version:

KTT Extra Large Tent

This model is probably the biggest pop up tent in the market. As it promises to sleep 12 people it is 25.2″L x 11″W x 11″H in dimensions. It is really heavy, 34 lbs, so you are not going to take this one backpacking for sure.

With this size, it is obviously a specialist product. The poles are strong enough to give you a good structure, but don’t expect it to stay up in a big storm.

The inner space can be divided into two rooms with mesh separation walls. The tent has three mesh windows for ventilation purposes. Thanks to the dome tent design, its walls are almost vertical, giving you the impression of larger inner space.

You can pull up the door curtain and stabilise it with two poles, making it a sunshade canopy.

It is decently water resistant for a pop up tent. 1500 mm HH is nowhere near waterproof territory, and with so many openings some water might sweep in during heavy downfalls. However it is well designed enough to give you shelter if a sudden rain hits you.

What To Look For In The Best Large Tents?

In my experience the key to finding the right product always comes down to what you want. How many people will use the tent? Is it a priority to be able to survive heavy rainfalls? Does it have to stand up to strong winds?

Needless to say most large tents are not ideal for backpacking. It just comes down to weight. A four person large tent will have sturdy poles, and thick walls. Not ideal to carry for long distances. If you are a family backpacker, you are better off carrying two separate, smaller tents.

How Waterproof Should A Large Family Tent Be?

Waterproofness is another critical factor; a high-quality tent will keep you dry even in heavy rain, thanks to durable, water-resistant materials. You don’t want to end up wet with your whole family. Imagine your kids waking up and being angry the whole day.

Large tents tend to be big, but not the most aerodynamic. They are not the best tents for withstanding heavy, windy conditions.

How easy and fast are they to set up? Pop up tents are the best in this regard, but their structural limitations does put a limit on their size and durability as well.

There are two types of big tents: dome tents or cabin tents. You can read about the differences between dome tents vs cabin tents in this article.

Large Inner Space

Comfort is essential, too; ample headroom, multiple rooms, and sufficient ventilation all contribute to a more enjoyable camping experience.

As a big person myself, in my reading large tents should have large doors as well. I can really appreciate large inner spaces and inner height. You might want to look at the tallest pop up tents here.

The special feature to look out for are front porches. These allow you to sit outside, enjoying the shade even in the strongest sunshine.

However we will take a look at the size of each tent, what is its capacity, how waterproof they are and how many people they can house.
