How To Choose Between The MSR Hubba NX vs HP?

What is the difference between the MSR Hubba NX vs HP tents? I started writing these comparison articles to help you make a more informed purchasing choice. In which conditions should you go for the MSR Hubba Nx? In which conditions is the MSR Hubba HP a better choice?

How Big Are They?

Inner, usable space is one of the most important factors when choosing between two tent models. On average the MSR product line has a quite big inner space. One of the unique selling points of the MSR Hubba Hubba is the great head height it offers.

We could say the MSR Hubba Hubba NX has slightly more inner space due to better pole geometrics. It almost functions as a dome tent, where the poles make the side walls nearly vertical, giving you greater average inner space. The 2 person MSR Hubba NX is ‎84″L x 50″W x 39″H. This means a total of 29 sq feet inner space. The 39″ inner height is really big for a two person backpacking tent, with additional 18 sq. feet total vestibule area.

MSR Hubba Poles

There is a slight difference between the poles of the two models. The MSR Hubba NX has anodised pegging points, while HP comes with webbing straps with a metal eyelet. All Hubba Hubba tents come with a pole splint, so you can repair the poles fast even in the wilderness.

MSR Hubba Hubba NX vs. HP Waterproofing

The MSR Hubba line is adequately waterproofed. Picture yourself snuggled up in your MSR Hubba NX while a gentle summer rain pitter-patters against your 30D ripstop nylon rainfly. With a 3000mm waterproof rating, you won’t have to worry about getting wet – this tent can handle those light rain showers with ease.

But what if you’re the type that loves to camp in wilder, more intense weather? That’s where the MSR Hubba HP strides in confidently. Its 40D ripstop nylon rainfly not only laughs in the face of heavier rain but with its 10000 mm HH waterproof rating it crushes the scene! To be fair this is the highest waterproof rating I have seen to date! It is really extraordinary!

MSR Hubba Condensation Issues

Both the MSR Hubba NX and HP are double-wall tents. Both have two separate layers, an inner tent made of breathable material, and an outer rainfly providing protection against weather. Double wall tents are less prone to condensation.

However here is the main difference between the HP and NX. There are large mesh areas on the inner layer of the NX. The positives of this are twofold: It helps keep the overall weight down and allows the air to circulate and freshen up. Breathability and lightweight design makes the NX excellent for summer, hot weather backpacking.

When it comes to four season use, neither the MSR Hubba NX nor the HP are specifically designed for extreme cold weather camping. But, they hold their own in 3-season conditions. The double-wall design aids in retaining warmth inside the tent.

MSR Hubba vs NX Rainfly

The MSR Hubba NX features a 30D ripstop nylon rainfly with a DuraShield polyurethane and silicone coating. It drapes over the tent and provides full coverage and reliable protection from heavy rain.

On the other hand, the Hubba HP’s rainfly is made from tightly woven, high-tenacity 40D nylon that offers a superior strength-to-weight ratio.

It’s worth noting that the HP’s rainfly extends lower, offering extra protection from driving rain and wind-blown debris, but the NX’s rainfly is easier to roll up for stargazing on clear nights.

Do MSR Hubba Tents Have Vestibules?

Both the MSR Hubba NX and HP has a vestibule. The MSR Hubba NX has one 9 square feet vestibule. Whereas the Hubba HP boasts two vestibules, each with a floor area of 8.75 square feet. These generously-sized vestibules allow you to keep your equipment handy and protected from the elements without cluttering or messing up your sleeping space.

Who is the MSR Hubba Hubba NX for?

Given the respective features of the MSR Hubba NX and HP, it’s clear that they’re both designed to withstand diverse weather conditions and terrains. The NX is an excellent, lightweight backpacking tent. With its easily retractable rainfly, would be ideal for those who enjoy a clear view of the night sky during fair-weather camping or for those who would like to adjust quickly to changing weather.

Who Do I Recommend The MSR Hubba HP For?

On the other hand, the HP protects better against driving rain and wind-blown debris with its dual vestibule design and lower-extending rainfly. This makes it a more favorable choice for campers who often encounter harsh weather conditions or for those who appreciate extra space for gear storage. Not to mention the extreme protection against rainfall that the 10 000 mm HH rainfly gives you!
