Naturehike Mongar 2 15D vs 20D – What Is The Difference?

What is the difference between the 15D and 20D versions of Naturehike Mongar 2? This popular tent comes in three different models, with the 210T polyester version completing the lineup.

As we are speaking about waterproof backpacking tents, basically three factors determine which is the best one for you:

  • Weight
  • Waterproofing
  • Price

Of course other factors like durability, UV resistance, ease to set up might play a part but these are small details.

The Naturehike Mongar 2 15D and 20D weight the same (2.1 kg / 4.73 lbs). However the 20D is almost double as waterproof, with the 210T being the most water resistant. The Naturehike Mongar 15D and 20D cost the same, significantly lower than the 210T model.

The main difference between these options is the thickness of the rainfly, and as a result the waterproofing. While 15D is the least waterproof, 20D is in the middle. 210T is the thickest, heaviest but as a result the most waterproof version of the Naturehike Mongar 2 as well. All of them have a waterproof rating somewhere between 2000-4000 mm HH.

Comparing the Naturehike Mongar 15D vs 20D vs 210T models.

I have put the categories in bold where a tent was clearly superior to the others.

Weight: The Naturehike 15D and 20D are significantly lighter than the 210T.

Waterproofing: The Naturehike Mongar 2 20D and 210T are clearly more waterproof.

Price: The 210T costs 35% of what the other 2 models cost. (As of January 2024)

Price

Probably this is what everybody is interested in the most. The 15D and 20D models cost around the same. They are both more expensive than the 210T model. The reason for this? They are lighter.

The Naturehike Mongar 2 15D and 20D were both designed for backpackers. Lightweight design is the name of the game. Even though the rainfly is slightly less waterproof, you carry almost half a kilo less on your back. That is a lot. Basically a 20% decrease in weight from the 210T.

Waterproofing

This brings me to the next question. Is the reduced waterproofness a risk? Do you have to worry that you will wake up soaking wet in the Naturehike Mongar 15D?

Well, there is conflicting information on the internet about how waterproof the rainfly of the Naturehike Mongar 2 really is. What we can say for sure, is that the 20D model is more waterproof than the 15D. The most waterproof is the 210T.

The 2000-3000 mm HH waterproof rating of the 15D means it is on the edge of being a truly waterproof tent. I think if you apply your own waterproof coating at home, you shouldn’t have to worry about heavy rains. The 20D is completely waterproof, with a 3000 mm HH rainfly.

The ground tarp of the Mongar 2 20D. With 4000 mm HH waterproofing, it prevents water from seeping inside.

All three models come with a waterproof ground cloth. There is no difference between the 15D and 20D, both have a 4000 mm HH waterproof rating.

Breathability

The inner mesh wall of the Naturehike Mongar 20D. Made of B3 breathable mesh, it is a big reason why the 20D is a great, breathable backpacking tent option.

All three models are breathable. I had no issues with breathability when I spent the night in my Naturehike Mongar 2 20D. This was down to the breathable inner mesh wall. There are two vestibules – one on each side – allowing for the air to circulate freely. A small mesh window on the side helps as well.

All three models are double wall tents. This protects against condensation.

Is Nylon Better Than Polyester?

The biggest question when comparing the Naturehike Mongar 2 15D model with the 210T is whether nylon is a better material for manufacturing tents than polyester? Nylon is lighter and more stretchable than polyester. On the other hand it is less UV resistant and will absorb water and sag faster than polyester.

All in all we can conclude that the 15D and 20D models are lighter and therefore have an advantage when it comes to backpacking. However Naturehike Mongar 2 210T is more UV resistant and durable.

Before you go…

It is entirely possible that you are not happy with either option from Naturehike. Maybe you want a tent for a similar price, but with better waterproofing. In that case I recommend the Featherstone Tent. You can read a longer review about it here:
