NTK Colorado GT 3-4 person tent

NTK Colorado GT Tent Review: Great Waterproofing

I was intrigued when I brought home my NTK Colorado GT 3 to 4 person tent from the post office. The packaging was really big and unexpectedly heavy. So I was curious to see how well designed and how well made this tent would be. Let’s go into my unbiased NTK Colorado GT review!

Fortunately I got what I expected: For a price below $100, the NTK Colorado GT does the job without any fancy extras or superior design. It is reliable, easy to assemble, spacious enough for 3 people and has decent waterproofing.

Honestly, this has been one of the hardest waterproof tent reviews to write. Simple because the NTK Colorado GT is good. Nothing more, nothing less. Just middle of the road good. Decent design, spacious enough, usual poles and stakes and decent waterproofing for a 3 season tent. Quite honestly there was not much to be angry or really positive about!

If you are looking for a decent 3-4 person waterproof tent for a low price, the NTK Colorado GT is for you!

The Good

  • Really spacious, easy can sleep 3 people. (84″L x 84″W x 52.8″H)
  • Low price, yet well designed.
  • Excellent ventilation.
  • Easy, fast to set up thanks to the pole system.
  • Top notch waterproofing. Passed the TentBroker Waterproofing Test with flying colours.
  • Two really big doors, with a vestibule on each side.
  • The carry bag was big, very easy to pack it away once you folded it up.

The Bad

  • The package is big and on the heavy side. The tent weights 8.6 lbs.

The NTK Colorado GT 3-4 person tent weights 8.6lbs (3.9 kg). It felt quite heavy to carry this product. The carry bag has two ears and it is zippered. You can find instructions for setting up inside.

How Waterproof Is It?

The 190T polyester rainfly has 2500 mm HH waterproofing. It covers the tent fully, and reaches over the sides everywhere. There is no chance the rainwater can drop inside the tent no matter how much it rains.

The TentBroker Waterproofness Test

I came up with the TentBroker Waterproofness Test to See if the design of the NTK Colorado GT presents an inherent waterproofing risk. Is there a window with poor waterproofing? Is the rainfly not covering the whole tent?

The test is really simple. I pour 4 litres of water on the tent and see if any of it makes it inside.

Water drops on the outside of the NTK Colorado GT tent- viewed from the inside.

I am happy to report that the NTK Colorado GT 3-4 person tent passed the waterproofness test with flying colours. There was not a single drop of water inside the tent, even though I really poured it on.

The rainfly helps a lot with keeping the tent waterproof. It reaches over the edge on all four sides, preventing water from seeping inside the tent. Any excess water will drop on the ground, and not inside the tent.

Do you have to worry about condensation?

Even though I didn’t spend a lot of time in the NTK Colorado GT, I would be really surprised if one would have a lot of problems with condensation. The majority of the inner wall is made of mesh, providing constant air flow.

Who Is The NTK Colorado GT For?

The NTK Colorado GT 3-4 person tent is a decent waterproof family tent. It is big enough to host three adults or a family with 2 small kids.

Basically if you are looking for a good 3 season waterproof tent that is cheap, easy to set up and gets the job done, it is for you.

I am really struggling to write a very long review about this tent, because it is decent. Just decent. So it is not great, not bad overall, nothing really positive out of the ordinary or really negative.

It does not specialise in anything really. With 2500 mm HH waterproof rating, it is a decent 3 season tent, however not waterproof enough for high altitude use. The ventilation, and the mesh covered D shaped doors give it enough air circulation that you can use it even in really hot weather. In case you don’t expect any rain you don’t need to put on the rainfly either. So overall it is a good all around 3-4 person waterproof tent, but not a specialist in anything really.

Is The NTK Colorado GT Worth Its Price Tag?

Absolutely. At this price range($85 on October 2023) it gets the job done well. The design is decent, but nothing fancy. It is reasonably waterproof, but big enough for 3 adults, or 2 adults and 2 children. Two big doors and vestibules are a big plus. Basically it is a working value tent.

Could it do better? Maybe the poles could be more durable and better designed. The stakes could be straight instead the usual bent aluminium stakes. The overall weight could be lower. The vestibules could protect the doors more. However these flaws are not getting in the way of the enjoyment with this tent.

How Fast Can You Set Up The NTK Colorado Waterproof Tent?

For me total set up time was 7 minutes. You might loose some time as you have to put the poles into a small aluminium stick to keep them standing. Another big part of setting up the tent was getting the rainfly on. However it went really easy and fast, I got it done on my first attempt. Even if you are having a bad day the whole setting up experience should not take more than 15 minutes.

You will find a short sheet with set up instructions inside the carry bag. Thankfully the shock cord connected fibreglass poles connect to the walls with plastic hooks. This significantly reduces the set up time of the tent.

The ends of the poles must be put through spikes at both ends. This is usually a solution found in cheaper tents, and it is not the most stable solution. When setting up it requires experience and a little ,,fingerspitzgefühl”. You might need to get some help from one of the other campers in case you haven’t done this a lot before.

There are four reflective, orange guylines coming with the tent to make the rainfly taut. I didn’t put these up out of pure laziness. The tent can stand without them. However they can’t hurt and they are reflective. So you won’t have any issues tripping over them in case you need to get around the tent to do your business at night.

NTK Colorado GT 3-4 Person Tent Review

Let’s go through the features of the NTK Colorado GT waterproof tent one by one and find out what I thought of the design.

The Inside

The inside of the tent feels spacious. It can easily house three adults, or a kid more. With four adults I had the feeling it might be a little tight. The tent has two huge vestibules, one on each side. So it is pretty easy to get in and out of the tent. But doors have a D shape, and close with a double door zippered design. The inner space is 52.8 inches high. (Internal dimensions: ‎82.68 x 82.68 x 57.09 inches)

Breathability

Breathability and ventilation are the best features of the NTK Colorado. With basically both sides of the walls made of half mesh, and two mesh doors this tent is extremely breathable. I would be surprised if you would get any issues with condensation.

Both doors are D shaped. The vestibules can be opened with two tapes and a zipper. The doors have two layers, the inner one made of mesh.So you can close it, preventing bugs from getting inside, while having the outer door open. This way you can further let the air circulate.

The vestibules don’t reach very much over the door. It is a shame, because in case it rains you have to keep the vestibules closed to prevent the rainwater from falling inside the tent.

The Footprint

The NTK Colorado GT 3-4 Person Tent doesn’t come with a footprint. The floor seems really sturdy and thick though.

The Stakes

There are 12 aluminium stake sin the package. They are the usual bended stakes that you find in value tents. They get the job done. However avoid stepping on them, these are the typical stakes that bend in case you put a lot of force on them.

Poles

These fibreglass poles are shock cord connected. They are nothing special. The thing with fibreglass poles is that they are not the most durable. However I think these poles get the job done but I would not praise these as anything amazing or out of the ordinary.

Seams

The seams are excellently designed. Double stitched seams hold together the rainfly and the ground floor. During my waterproof test the water didn’t seep through the seams. However it helps that the stitching is a little bit above the floor, so you don’t get any water seeping inside the tent even if the ground around the tent is really wet.

Weight and Portability

It is definitely on the heavy side and the package is quite big (23 x 7.2 x 7 inches). I recommend that you take a car, and don’t carry this tent very long on your back.

Conclusion

This review might not have been the most inspired you are going to read on TentBroker. However it is the reality of how I feel about the NTK Colorado GT 3-4 Person Tent. It is well designed, gets the job done, spacious enough and has good waterproofing. However I don’t see anything extraordinary in its design, anything that makes it stand out from other 3-4 person tents. It is a reliable value tent that will do a good job for you.
